WHEN A THEME STOPS BEING ENOUGH

WordPress is not the problem. The build usually is.

WordPress runs a huge share of the web because it is flexible, editable and owned by you instead of a platform. Most slow, fragile WordPress sites are not slow because of WordPress. They are slow because a multipurpose theme, a visual page builder and thirty plugins were stacked on top of each other to fake features that a few hundred lines of purpose-built code would handle cleanly.

  • Every update is a gamble on which plugin breaks next.
  • The site scores in the red on mobile page speed no matter what cache plugin you add.
  • Your team is afraid to edit pages because the builder layout falls apart.
  • You need a real integration with your CRM, ERP, booking system or quoting tool, and plugins only get you halfway.
  • You are paying for five premium plugin licenses to do one job.

If an off-the-shelf theme genuinely fits, we will say so. Custom development earns its cost when the business needs speed, structure or integrations a template cannot provide.

WHAT WE BUILD ON WORDPRESS

Custom development, from theme to integration.

Every project is scoped in writing before work starts. Most combine two or three of these; very few need all six.

Custom WordPress themes

A theme written for your site only: your layouts, your content types, your brand, and nothing else loaded on the page. Built on native blocks and custom fields so editing stays simple for non-technical staff.

Custom plugins

Business logic that belongs in a plugin, not a theme: calculators, quote builders, member areas, directories, custom post types and admin tools. We write and maintain production WordPress plugins of our own, so this is familiar ground.

API and CRM integrations

Forms and data wired into HubSpot, Salesforce, Zoho, ServiceTitan, booking platforms, ERPs and internal systems through their APIs, with logging so a failed sync is noticed instead of silently losing leads.

WooCommerce development

Stores that need more than a stock checkout: B2B pricing, quote requests, custom product configurators, subscriptions and inventory feeds, built without turning the store into a plugin museum.

Performance and rebuilds

Page-builder sites rebuilt as lean custom themes with the same URLs, the same content and a redirect map for anything that moves, so the speed gain does not cost the rankings you already have.

Enterprise and headless WordPress

Multisite networks, role and approval workflows, SSO, staging pipelines and, when the case is real, a headless front end that reads WordPress over the REST API while editors keep the familiar dashboard. More on enterprise WordPress.

CUSTOM VS. OFF THE SHELF

Where custom code pays for itself.

A template is cheaper on day one. The difference shows up over the next three years, in speed, in maintenance hours and in what the site can do.

ENTERPRISE WORDPRESS DEVELOPMENT

WordPress that fits a larger organization.

Larger teams usually hit the same walls: too many people editing, no approval step, a staging site nobody trusts, and marketing waiting on IT for every landing page.

  • Roles and editorial workflows that match who is allowed to publish what.
  • Staging and version-controlled deploys, so changes are reviewed before they reach production.
  • Single sign-on, audit logging and security hardening for IT and compliance reviews.
  • Multisite or multi-location structures that share a design system without copying pages.
  • Documented code and a handoff your internal developers can pick up without us.

Enterprise WordPress development, in detail. We are a small studio, which means the developer who scopes the work is the one writing it. For organizations that need a 24/7 support desk, we will say so up front rather than pretend.

HOW A BUILD RUNS

Four stages. No surprises.

01

Discovery

Goals, content types, integrations, editors, hosting and the existing site audited, including every URL that already ranks.

02

Scope in writing

A fixed-price scope covering templates, features, integrations, migration and launch. If scope changes, the number changes in writing first.

03

Build on staging

Theme, blocks, plugins and integrations developed on a private staging site you can click through and edit before launch.

04

Launch and hand off

Redirects, speed and form checks, Search Console monitoring and an editing walkthrough recorded for your team.

INVESTMENT

Fixed scopes. Published starting points.

WHAT HELPS THE WORK MOVE

Clear access. Honest limits.

Your part

  • Admin access to the current site and hosting.
  • A list of the tools the site needs to talk to.
  • The people who will edit the site, available for one walkthrough.
  • Real content, or budget for us to write it.

What we will not do

  • Resell a $59 theme as custom work.
  • Lock the site behind our hosting or a proprietary builder.
  • Install a plugin for every feature.
  • Launch without a redirect map.

Custom WordPress questions.

What is custom WordPress development?

It means the theme and any required plugins are written specifically for your site instead of adapting a multipurpose template or page builder. You still get the normal WordPress dashboard and block editor, but the code only does what your site needs, which keeps it faster, easier to maintain and easier to extend.

How much does a custom WordPress website cost?

Custom WordPress sites start at $2,999 for a focused 6 to 15 page business site. Plugin development, integrations and WooCommerce work are scoped per project, and enterprise builds with multisite, headless or SSO requirements start at $5,000. Every project gets a fixed written scope before any money changes hands.

Will I still be able to edit the site myself?

Yes. Content is built with native WordPress blocks, reusable patterns and custom fields, so staff can change text, images, pages and posts without breaking the layout. Every launch includes a recorded editing walkthrough.

Can you rebuild our Elementor, Divi or WPBakery site?

Yes. We rebuild page-builder sites as lean custom themes, keep the existing URLs where possible, map redirects for anything that moves and monitor Search Console after launch so rankings are protected through the switch.

Do you build custom WordPress plugins?

Yes. Custom plugins handle business logic such as quote calculators, member areas, directories, custom post types, admin tools and API integrations with CRMs, ERPs and booking systems. Plugins are version-controlled, documented and handed over with the site.

Do you do headless WordPress?

When it genuinely fits. Headless WordPress, where a separate front end reads content over the REST API, suits some app-like and multi-channel projects. For most business sites a well-built traditional theme is faster to launch, cheaper to maintain and just as quick for visitors, and we will recommend that instead.

Do you only work with Quad Cities businesses?

No. QC Webworks is based in Moline, Illinois and works with businesses in Davenport, Bettendorf, Rock Island and across the Quad Cities, plus remote clients nationwide. The process, scope and handoff are the same either way.
